DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Welcome back!
It’s been a while since you’ve sat in a theatre reading a program, surrounded by the buzz of an audience, looking at a stage set up and ready for actors to take you on a journey. We are delighted you are here.
The “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” opened Off-Broadway at the 2nd Stage Theatre on February 7, 2005, and was quickly moved to Broadway, where it completed an incredible run of 1,136 performances. The “Bee” was the recipient of the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, and the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.
In a world where it seems words are only being used to divide us, it is a pleasure to be reintroduced to words that make us think and laugh. Words, like life, evolve and change. New words and new life experiences are added to our vocabulary every day. The “adolescent” participants in the “Bee” explore, not only words but their own emerging identities as they seek to gain mastery over the pubescent pandemonium of their lives. They find a common ground and learn that a better outcome awaits them. Ambition, desire, ethics, hope, victory, and loss will play major roles before this Spelling Bee is completed.
As is often true, we learn from our children. While, the crucial education they gain may not register for all the Bee’s contestants immediately, as William Finn’s brilliant lyrics remind us all, “It’s a very nice beginning.”
The cast and production team of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” have dedicated themselves to this project. I thank them for the joy, talent, and dedication they have shared throughout this process.
It has truly given me Thalposis. Look it up!

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
This Production of Putnam County 25th Annual Spelling Bee, the Artistic Staff, the Production Team, the musicians and this Multi-talented Cast and Crew are very special to me; as they are helping CCMT come back to producing Musical Theatre after an almost 3 year closure. 2021 would have been CCMT's 60th anniversary, and we are hoping we can celebrate that milestone in the next 24 months. We are especially grateful to the El Campanil Theatre for giving CCMT the opportunity to share this production with audiences in East County, and are grateful to all of you who are here to experience this wildly funny show.
Please also join us next Spring when we will present "Ain't Misbehavin", a jazzy musical revue with songs from the 1910's-1930's popularized by Fatts Waller, one of the first black composers of a Broadway Show and a legendary jazz pianist. More information will be available toward the end of this year.
And now, sit back and Be prepared for a riotous ride, complete with audience participation, as Contra Costa Musical Theatre presents Putnam County 25th Annual Spelling Bee…

SYNOPSIS
An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

CREATIVE BIOS
Based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm

The Farm was founded in 2000 by Rebecca Feldman, Artistic Director. It is a collective of writers and performers, including Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for the theatre. The Farm initially designates a two-week intensive period in which to discover, develop, and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include “Super” (at Atlantic Theatre Studios), “Why I Hate Florida” (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E” (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is based. The character and original dialogue of “Beth Marguiles,” “Vice President Douglas Panch,” “Mr. Barfee,” and “Logan Schwarzengrubenierre” were created by Rebecca Feldman, Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg, respectively.
