Get to Know Our Ain’t Misbehavin’ Director

Say hi to Steven Thomas!

Contra Costa Musical Theatre is proud to present “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” a Fat Waller Tribute playing at the Lesher Center for this Arts October 13 - 29.

Our production comes to life under the direction of Steven Thomas, an incredible talent who has spent his entire life bringing the arts to people of all ages.

Steven brings his passion and experience to our latest production, and we were thrilled to spend time with him to get some insight into his vision for CCMT’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’!”

1.    What is your vision for this production of “Ain’t Misbehavin’?

My vision of this show is classy, humorous, and full of wonderful music.

2.    What does this show mean to you?

This show means so much to me. Years ago, I had the opportunity to play the Viper role, and the cast and I had so much fun under the direction of Patricia Turner. It opened up many avenues for me as a vocalist.

3.    What is Fats Waller’s legacy to you, and how are you honoring this legacy in this production?

Fats Wallers' legacy to me is I'm always smiling after hearing his music. Unfortunately, he didn't receive the recognition that was due to him, so to honor him and his legacy of music, we share his talent through this production with a talented cast and musicians. With the intent of touching your heart, making you smile and laugh, and getting a different perspective on some of his songs.

4.    This is the second time CCMT is doing Ain’t Misbehavin’ this year. What is different about this production? Why should folks see it for a second time or for the first?

What is different about this production is we have some new talented cast members, new musicians, and a new set design. A completely new show with a different interpretation of the songs. Plus, it's just a wonderful show, and who doesn't like a wonderful show?

5.    Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you got involved with CCMT.

I was raised in a theater family. Both my mom and dad were performers. I started as a ballet dancer at 7 years old, which led to doing musicals, then landing leads and eventually being part of an acapella quintet, which allowed me to share my talents all around the world.

In the first production of CCMT's “Ain't Misbehavin',” I was hired as a consultant.  When CCMT decided to re-open “Ain't Misbehavin',” I was hired as the director.

Come see Steven’s CCMT directorial debut this fall at the Lesher Center for the Arts.
